Kilimanjaro, TZ – Father sells vegetables to fund vacation tutoring for children – 8 May 2015
The GBR family started their garden in August, 2014. The family has taken responsibility for making their garden one of the most sustainable gardens in the community.
The GBR family is one of the only families in Mkyashi with a nursery. They grow mustard seeds, amaranthus, and kale seedlings to keep their garden constantly productive. The father has a goal of getting consistent harvests from his garden all year long.
Currently the family is able to eat vegetables every day and sell vegetables when they need to. The consistent harvest has enabled the family to earn and save money. This past holiday break, when schools closed, the two children were able to go to school for small group tutoring for 10,000 TZS (US $5.71) each. The father was very excited about this, because usually the kids just play with their friends and forget much of what they learned the previous term. He was happy that all day he didn’t have to worry about the children, he knew they were safe and productive.
The GBR children have a great opportunity to earn better lives for themselves and their families. Their parents are wealthier than many other parents in the community – they have 4 cows and 5 goats – so if the children do well in their school examinations they could go to post-secondary school and learn a trade or get a degree. The family hopes to keep saving money with their garden to send their children to tutoring during school breaks.
