Battambang, KH – Garden helps father be with family – 29 Jul 2014
KK and his wife have two children, the oldest is in grade one at school. KK supports their family by working as a building laborer and a vegetable planter, but the work is seasonal and not consistent.
Consequently they are very poor and find life a struggle. KK has just come from Thailand where he worked illegally as a construction laborer. He returned because of the very poor living conditions provided by the construction company. He has vowed not to return to Thailand again, and plans to do everything he can to support his family and children’s education by working in Cambodia.
The Healthy Life Reinforcement garden shop’s team of Phea and Lai helped him build a Food Always In The Home (FAITH) garden. He is working very hard to keep the garden productive so that it will feed his family, and earn them some income from vegetable sales. The garden is looking very good!
KK now says that the garden has contributed a lot to his food supply, and also gives his family additional income to support his child’s education. From the start of the garden until now, he has harvested vegetables three times. Each time he earns between US$ 5 to US$ 15 from selling some of the vegetables, which the family uses to buy rice for their meals and school materials for their oldest child.
The family harvested the morning glory in the picture the other day. Morning glory is a green vegetable that is eaten by many families every day because it can be prepared as a soup, vegetable salad, fried vegetable, and many other ways. Morning glory is the most popular vegetable eaten by people in the local community.
KK is very grateful for the opportunity the garden has given him to feed his family and earn them some income.
