Ngara, TZ – Ayubu Timotheo shows enthusiasm and discipline working in school garden – 20 Nov 2017
Ayubu Timotheo is one of the student leaders of SODAT’s school vegetable gardening program. He is in Standard 6 (equivalent to 6th grade) and has shown enthusiasm and discipline for maintaining the school’s growing vegetable garden.
Ayubu says one of the reason he enjoys the work is that he believes he can use the skills he is learning for the rest of his life. He also sees immediate benefits for himself and his classmates.
“Eating vegetables helps to improve our health which improves our education,” explains Ayubu, “My view is that we should be eating more than porridge at school.”
Ayubu’s leadership has earned him the privilege of applying organic pest repellent and fertilizer on the gardens. Many students want the responsibility because they think it is fun to use the spray backpack. However, the sprays must be applied correctly and the pack is expensive so only the most trustworthy students are allowed to use it.
Next year Ayubu will be preparing for his exams so he won’t have as much time to focus on work in the garden. In the future he wants to be a farmer with a much bigger farm than the few acres they tend at school.
