Siem Reap, KH – Family hope to move to Rent-to-Own home – 14 Apr 2017
Weun and his wife want to move to the Peaksneng Thormacheat Rent-to-Own community, because their current home is in an isolated area away from other families.
They want their children to grow up in a more communal environment, and are overjoyed because the local church has offered them a grant for a down payment on a Rent-to-Own home.
The family have recently been focusing on improving the productivity of their garden in order to reduce their food bills, and the effort has paid off because they have cut their food bill in half.
In the past, they normally spent US$75 per month on food, but have only spent US$35 per month to feed their family of five since they focused on increasing the yield from their organic vegetable garden. Most of the US$35 is spent on proteins like fish, beef and pork, which supplement the vegetables from the garden.
Drought and the high cost of seeds have been challenges for them. They are considering digging their well deeper, so that they will not struggle for water during the next dry season, and the savings from reduced grocery bills will help pay for seeds.
