Ngara, TZ – Two more primary schools begin path towards sustainable breakfast – 15 Oct 2017
Mukirehe and Kabalenzi Primary Schools are starting their journey on the path to creating a sustainable school breakfast program. Both schools planted over 400 banana trees. The schools can begin harvesting bananas in 12-14 months.
Bananas offer many benefits to Self-Reliant School Breakfast Farms:
- They require very little maintenance
- They are self-fertilizing
- They can be harvested year-round
- They produce a nutritious and filling crop
Better Lives contributed labor to dig holes for the banana seedlings and manure to plant the trees. Local parents contributed seedlings from their own banana farms. Corn was planted between rows of banana trees to provide additional nourishment for students.
Both schools are now discussing with SODAT how they can sustainably grow other nutritious breakfast foods including corn, beans, and vegetables.
