Ngara, TZ – Mukibogoye shows progress towards food self-reliance – 1 Aug 2017
This month Mukibogoye Primary School made their first material progress towards becoming food self-reliant. The school committed to supplying vegetables for breakfast at least one day per week, reducing the amount of porridge contributed by SODAT.
This first small step was a long time in the making. After years of experimenting with organic vegetable gardening, SODAT now has 10 organic vegetable gardens at Mukibogoye Primary School. The vegetables, combined with either locally-grown beans or corn flour, are replacing the porridge SODAT used to provide.
SODAT and Mukibogoye are collaborating to implement a Self-Reliant School Breakfast Farm at the school. The purpose of the farm is to provide enough good for daily nutritious breakfast at school. The farm will include banana trees, corn and bean fields, and vegetable gardens.
