Kikondo, UG – Small gains add up to big change and big dreams for primary school teacher – 30 Aug 2017
Mama KMK is showing how small gardens can gradually create bigger life improvements for families who are able to plan ahead. Her garden generated enough income for her to start small shop. Income from the shop enabled her to start a small pig-fattening project. She hopes the pig-fattening will enable her to buy a piece of land in Kikondo for farming and building a home.
Mama KMK started her 3-bed organic vegetable garden at the end of 2016. She is a teacher at Destiny Primary School – a private school in Kikondo – and as soon as she started harvesting vegetables she had a ready market of other teachers who wanted to buy organic produce. On average Mama KMK sold 2,000 UGS (US $0.61) of vegetables per day. She also saved an average of 5,000 UGS (US $1.51) per week because she no longer had to buy vegetables. Mama KMK invested her first income in a small restaurant serving “Rolex” – a Ugandan specialty dish featuring a chapati dipped in egg and wrapped around vegetables. She combined her restaurant income with her garden income and purchased 3 piglets that she will fatten and sell.
Mama KMK never imagined she could have three sources of income in addition to her job as a teacher. Now she is dreaming of purchasing a piece of land in Kikondo so she can build a house and set up a more permanent farm, store, and restaurant.
