Moshi, TZ – Visiting students help Mwangaria move towards food self-reliance at school – 25 Jul 2017
Frensham Heights and ISL students worked with school and community members to dig over 60 meters of 1 meter deep trenches for installing irrigation at Mwangaria Primary School’s farm. After trenching, the group installed mainline piping, distribution piping, and one new standpipe. Their efforts marked the first time international volunteers had contributed to developing the school farm and this support inspired over 80 community volunteers to help with the trenching work.
Tupendane is developing Self-Sustaining School Breakfast Farms. The program is designed to teach student-led garden clubs best-practice farming skills and enable them to grow food for school breakfast. Irrigation that is efficient, effective, and easy to use is critical to allowing small groups of students to grow enough food to feed themselves and their classmates.
As the Self-Sustaining School Breakfast Farm expands, Tupendane will continue installing more standpipes. The final farm design includes 8 standpipes serving 90 vegetable garden beds and 284 banana trees.
