Kikondo, UG – Water access enables family to start small vegetable garden – 7 Jun 2017
The FMJ family moving towards food self-reliance with the help of Wamukisa’s water conservation and organic vegetable garden training. After implementing a water harvesting system in May 2016, the family started an organic vegetable garden in January 2017.
The FMJ family started harvesting rain water in May 2016. This reduced the number of trips their seven children had to make to the spring to fetch water, which enabled them to spend more time studying and playing. The extra water also enabled the parents to start a small three bed vegetable garden.
Since they started the garden they have enjoyed vegetable two or three times per week. So far they have enjoyed eating French beans, eggplants, and onions from the garden as well as cassava harvested from the “living fence”. The father says his goal is to harvest enough vegetables to feed his family each day. If possible, he would also like to harvest extra vegetables to sell. To achieve this productivity, he will need more water than he is able to harvest. He will need a water connection supplying affordable and easy to access water.
